Defense CNC Machining | Military Manufacturing

0%

Military personnel are entirely dependent on their equipment to operate and function properly. For this reason, a defense component is required to have the ability to withstand maximum use in extreme environments.

Defense CNC Machining is a necessary manufacturing method in the military, as it provides a highly precise and extremely accurate production operation. A CNC Machine is, ultimately, capable of producing a consistently durable defense component. With that being said, this manufacturing procedure is the go-to choice for military applications.

Our machine shop recently received the opportunity to produce a unique and complex CNC machined part for the Military and Defense Industry. This defense CNC machining project, specifically, is for the Navy. We effectively manufactured a highly qualified and high performing component for the company NAVSEA, or Naval Sea Systems Command. NAVSEA provides the United States Navy with sophisticated ships, submarines and combat systems.

Here at P4Swiss | Lindel CNC Machining, we offer advanced manufacturing services. We have a team of expert machinists that can successfully fabricate a continuously reliable and dependable defense component.

    What Is Defense CNC Machining?

Defense CNC Machining for the Navy is, certainly, a critical aspect of military manufacturing. CNC machinery has the capability to produce complex components for ships, submarines and combat systems used in the Military and Defense Industry.

CNC manufacturing will, essentially, involve the use of a CNC (computer numerical control) machine during the fabrication process. This type of machining is going to extract material with high speed cutting tools in an automated motion. A CNC machine utilizes a pre-programmed software, so that the cutting tool movements can be precisely controlled. The pre-programmed instructions will be encoded using a CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) system.

Because of the advanced technology of CNC manufacturing today, military equipment is guaranteed to receive a highly intricate production operation, when produced with CNC machinery.

There is a critical nature of military applications. Defense CNC Machining is subject to significantly strict quality standards. In other words, a defense part for the Navy has to meet precise specifications and regulations, with specific tolerances. These firm requirements are going to help ensure that each component manufactured for the Military and Defense Industry are to the highest standards of quality and reliability, while also making sure that the military equipment is safe and effective in the field, constantly.

All in all, defense CNC machining plays a crucial role in producing a wide range of components for ships, a variety of parts for submarines and various combat systems in the Navy. The CNC machining process is going to ensure the accuracy and reliability that is needed of these defense components, especially in extremely challenging and, oftentimes, hostile environments.

    5-Axis CNC Defense Machining

5-axis CNC defense machining is utilized to produce precise and complex parts for military applications, which includes the Navy.

The manufacturing process on a 5-axis CNC machine is going to contain two additional axes of motion, when compared to the more traditional 3-axis machine. This machining technique is capable of manufacturing alongside numerous axes on a part, simultaneously. 5-axis machinery, specifically, relies on a cutting tool to move in 5 separate directions, all while the tool is rotating.

"This means that we can machine on all five sides of a defense part, without having to let go of it", says Tom Ferrara, General Manager at P4Swiss | Lindel CNC Machining.

A 5-axis CNC machine is, especially, well suited for fabricating military and defense components, because this type of machining allows for the precise manufacturing of intricate geometries and complex shapes, with accuracy. In addition to that, a 5-axis CNC machine is also going to provide:

    • Less Setups - The more traditional 3-axis machine requires multiple setups to efficiently produce the geometry, by having to manually rotate the particular part. However, when using the 5-axis CNC machine for complex geometries, there are less setups involved.
    • Shorter Production Time - On a 5-axis CNC machine, more material can be removed from the workpiece with each cutting tool pass. This will ensure lower cycle times.
    • Fewer Costs - In addition to that, fewer costs will also be guaranteed, due to the material removal process going at a faster rate.
    • Improved Surface Finish - With 5-axis CNC machining, an improved surface finish can be achieved. The part is able to move closer to the cutting tools, which means that the cutting apparatus is, ultimately, shorter. This process is less likely to cause vibrations at cutting speeds that are high.

Overall, 5-axis CNC machining is a vital process in manufacturing components for military applications. 5-axis CNC machines enable a successful production of complex geometries and precise components that are critical for the operation and effectiveness of military and defense equipment.
